Some of the things you might need will be difficult to buy in Cusco so we recommend buying them beforehand or bringing them from home.
What You Need To Know About The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
- There are two types of Inca Trails you can hike to Machu Picchu, one is the 4-day “Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu” and the other is the 2-day version which is called “Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu”.
- The 2-day Inca Trail Hike has less elevation gain than the Inca Trail 4 Days. There are several advantages to hiking the 2-day version, that being that you have more time for sightseeing on The train till km 104 which is the beginning of this hike. And it’s less strenuous.
- The temperature on the Machu Picchu Hike changes depending on how high up you are going. The higher you go, the colder it gets. Depending on the time of year and weather conditions in Cusco. your pack should weigh between 8 to 12 kilograms max(17 to 26 pounds)
- You will need Appropriate hiking shoes for the Inca Trail, a day pack, and a sleeping bag/fleece liner for the night.
- Lucky hikers that get sunny days on the trail but you should bring sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat or scarf with you if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones.
- You will need water purification tablets or a filter if you are bringing your water bottles with you to hydrate. You can drink tap water on the trail so don’t worry about buying new bottles for this hike.
Don’t Bring These Items For the Inca Trail Tours
- Flip-flops (thongs/sandals): (you are going to hike not to the beach)
- Swimsuit: (There are no pools on the Inca Trail) (In case you are doing 5 days Inca Trail, yes you should consider bringing) Talk with your travel agent or contact us.
- Roup or stream: not need each. If you need one, Travel Company has enough.
- Gaiters: is not necessary if you have good quality Inca Trail Hiking Shoes
- Cup/ Mugs + Lighter: You don’t need one, we will carry all the cutlery with us.
- Pocket Knife: Bring a small one if you need it, is optional Tour Leaders carry it all the time
- Water Filter or purificator: you do need it, Each comp provides boiled and purified water each morning after Breakfast and after lunch
- Tablet (optional)
- Plastic Bags: will Provide you in your pre-departure briefing some for your clothes
- Pajamas and sleeping socks: (optional) Don’t be silly
Inca Trail Elevation
The Inca Trail Peru is not a difficult Hike, but there are some steep climbs and declines. If you’re doing the two-day trek, you’ll go higher than 2,600 meters (8,530 feet).

- Our porters are incredible! They’ll carry all of the camping equipment, set up a camp kitchen and dining tent for lunch, and set up a full camp every night. They’ll immediately pass you by on the route each morning and will have your camp set up before you get there every time. During the trip, the chefs will cook all of your meals for you.
- REI Tents. Generally, these are provided and carried by Our porters, so they DO NOT count in your weight allowance limit. ours is REI Half Dome 4 only for 2 People. The porters will also set up a shared dining tent.
- A small duffel Bag for your personal belongings that the porters will carry – with a maximum filled weight limit of 7kg (15lbs, 3.6oz). You will only have access to this at camp in the evenings and overnight. We Make Sure to Include it in YOUR TOUR. since some other Companies offer this as an option for an additional fee.
- Water after the first day of your trek. Most companies ask you to carry water the first day. Then we’ll fill your bottles or water reservoir with boiled water at mealtimes. (bring purifying tablets – be sure to check).
- All meals during the trek. Plates, utensils, cups, etc. Our porters will carry everything to magically set up breakfast, lunch, popcorn, hot drinks, and dinner each day – often with several courses for each meal! You might want a few small snacks, but even these are sometimes provided by us. After you reach Machu Picchu, meals are not included. But you can get lunch at the restaurant in Aguas Calientes.
- A portable toilet. Our Portable toilets & tents are private only for our Group they’ll be set up at lunch and overnight in camp.
- Transfer to km 82 (the starting point), entrance fees/trail passes for the trek and Machu Picchu, and train tickets from Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Cusco.
- Avoid carrying heavy outdoor equipment we will provide or rent you sleeping mats, hiking poles, and sleeping bags. Bringing a mat will count toward your weight limit for more info Contact Us.
Inca Trail Seasons and Weather
Dry season: This is the dry season if you go trekking in June, July, August, or September. You’re less likely to have rain during your journey throughout these months. However, when you get to Machu Picchu, it will be more crowded.
(The number of people permitted on the trail is the same in all seasons, but many people take the train to get there rather than hike.) You’ll also need to be cautious about protecting yourself from the sun, which is powerful at such a high elevation.
Wet season: The wet season lasts from October to April. (The Inca Trail is closed in February each year for repairs, although Machu Picchu is still accessible.)
Rainy season mud can make the already difficult trek even more challenging. The disadvantage is that Machu Picchu may be less crowded, and you will have better landscape views for your photographs.

Inca Trail Packing for Beginners

The Inca Trail is a popular hiking route that leads to Machu Picchu, one of the most famous ancient ruins in the world. If you’re planning to take this journey, it’s important to pack correctly. Here are some tips to help you get ready:
Inca Trail Necessary Clothes.
– Temperature: When hiking the Inca Trail, you want to be prepared for any type of weather that might come up during your hike. Even though it is unlikely that there will be snow or heavy rain on this hike, it is still important to dress in layers and take a waterproof jacket with you.
– Warm Clothes: We already mentioned that it is important to dress in layers but we want to mention it again. You will likely get cold during the hike and carry a big backpack, which makes it even harder to
Warm Fleece Pants: These will keep you warm on cold nights. Leather hiking boots are required for this trek, so make sure your shoes are broken in well before the hike begins. You should bring an extra pair of socks too.
– Socks: You should bring at least 2 or 3 pairs of clean socks on the Inca Trail Packing List as you will have to change them a lot since they will get dirty quickly. warm-up.
Inca Trail Primary Accessories
– Waterproof Backpack: (external Frame) or (Internal Frame) As we said above, one of the most important things to bring on this hike is a waterproof backpack as sometimes it can rain during your hike and you want a certain dry place for your equipment. Another benefit of a waterproof backpack is that you will be able to keep all your belongings dry inside of it.
– Day pack: this is something you can use during the day to carry water and food around with you. We recommend getting a light shoulder bag since it’s more comfortable to carry around.
– Trekking Poles: Trekking poles are important when you hike on rough terrain for a long period. You can rent them at the start of the Inca Trail for S/.70 (3 soles) per pole but we recommend buying your own before starting your trek.
– Headlamp: Headlamps are important for hikers who get to camp late or if they need to use the bathroom during darkness. It is also very useful when you want to read something at night or if your friends want to play cards after dinner and it’s too dark outside of the tent.
(Goretex) Hiking boots or running shoes are perfect for the Inca Trail and should be include on your Inca Trail Packing List. You can also bring a pair of sneakers or any other type of shoes you might need during the hike as they will probably get ruined anyway.
– Sunglasses: Sunglasses are very useful during the hike as you will be passing through different types of forests and there is a big chance that you will end up with dirt or pollen in your eyes at some point.
– Mosquito Repellent: Since there are lots of mosquitoes on this trail, it is important to include mosquito repellent on your Inca Trail Packing List.
Inca Trail Clothes
– Fleece Jacket: It gets pretty cold at night, even during the summertime on the Inca Trail. You should bring a fleece jacket with you that you can wear during nighttime and underneath your rain jacket if it is raining heavily.
– Rain Jacket: This might be obvious but we mention it again because it is very important to bring your rain jacket on the Inca Trail Packing List, especially if you are hiking during wintertime or when it is about to start raining.
– Waterproof Bag(s): We suggest bringing one waterproof bag that you will use during the day to protect your belongings from getting wet. You can bring 2 if you want, one for the day and one for the night.
A lot of people do not recommend bringing a money belt with you but we include it on our Inca Trail Packing List because it is an easy way to carry your passport and credit cards.
– Sun Hat: Sun hats are very useful on the Inca Trail because you will be walking under strong sunlight for a long time and they protect your face from sunburn.
– Gloves: Gloves are very useful for cold nights and they protect your hands from blisters.
– Water Bottles: It is a good idea to bring a hydration bladder/ backpack along with 1 or 2 water bottles on your Inca Trail Packing List as you can refill them at the drinking water stations along the trail.
For Sleep Well
– Sleeping Pad: It is heavily advise that you bring your own lightweight self-inflating sleeping pad. The lower the R-value, the better (R values measure insulation). If you are camping in the winter it would be advisable to bring an extra foam pad for added comfort and warmth under your sleeping bag. Renting is available in Cusco but once again, it’s not worth the weight.
– Sleeping Bag: Sleeping bags are not included in the Inca Trail Tours package and need to be rented or bought before arriving at your destination. You can also bring your sleeping bag depending on how long you intend to stay hiking. The longer your Inca Trail Packing List is, the heavier it will be to carry from your destination better to rent in our office.
– Headphone/ earplugs: People like to listen to music or podcasts when they are hiking so it is always good to bring these along on the Inca Trail Packing List. You can also use them if you want to sleep earlier than everyone else in your group.
– Camera + Extra Batteries: If you are planning on carrying a camera during your Inca Trail Packing List, then you will need extra batteries as it is very likely that they will get exhausted quickly.
– Portable charger: – It has happened to all of us, the battery goes out on our camera or cell phone and we need it for an important call or picture. You can never be too safe so make sure you bring a portable charger with you.
Medication & Skin Protection
– First Aid Kit: Make sure you include important medicines like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or Paracetamol on the Inca Trail Packing List as well as bandages, painkillers, and disinfectant cream.
– Suncream: This should be on your Inca Trail Packing List no matter what time of year you are starting your hike as you will pass through different altitudes during the day and might get sunburnt.
– Mosquito repellant: – The best kind of mosquito repellent is the one that has DEET in it since it lasts long and doesn’t come off with water. However, do not use it near your eyes or mouth. Some mosquitos can carry yellow fever so it’s best not to take any chances.
– Lip balm: – It might get cold or windy on your way so it’s important to protect your lips with lip balm.
Inca Trail Documentations
– Passport: You will need your passport on the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, so make sure you bring it along with you.
– Money: Bring extra tips for the guides and porters (if you want). Usually about $50 or less per person is alright for tipping at the end of the Inca Trail. You can also bring a lot more if you would like, but it’s not expected at all.
– ID: It’s always good to have an ID with you everywhere you go. In case anything happens, it could be very useful as well as just for personal identification purposes.
– Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is always a good idea to have on you. In case of any emergency, it will help you get the best possible care.
In the small village where you will sleep at night, there are very few toilets and sinks. We recommend that you include toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, and other hygiene products on the Inca Trail Packing List just in case.
– Quick Dry Towel: – Bring a quick-dry towel since it will be very useful in the hot springs and also for the Inca Trail. It will dry out a lot faster than a normal towel and is more compact.
– Wet wipes/baby wipes: – These are very useful in the Inca Trail when you need to clean yourself if there is no running water. They’re also good for cleaning your hiking boots and socks.
